Supply Chain Graphic of the Week: Tracking the Number of US Truck Drivers

Despite Growth in Freight Volumes, Driver Jobs Down a Bit in 2020 vesus 2001

May 18,  2021

Here is an interesting question for readers: does the US right now hav more or fewer truck driving job than in the past?'

As shown in the graphic below, from a new report by Coyote Logistics, the answer is a little less than in 2001, with just under 3 million drivers, including drivers of both heavy duty and light duty trucks.

In fact, the number of jobs dropped a few hundred thousand in the 2008-09 recession, and it took until 2017 to reach pre-recession levels again.

Sone questions: US freight volumes have increased substantially since 2001, yet the number of drivers were down a bit in 2020 from that earlier period. Somehow, trucjking efficiency must have significntly improved.

Question 2: Would the current total be up 100,00+ - the range of what some say is a great US    driver shortage - if all        open positions were able to be filled?
