A trio of consultants from McKinsey have released a new book called "No Ordinary Disruption: The Four Forces Breaking All the Trends," and while targeting a more general business audience, as almost always the subject matter has a wide range of supply chain implications.

Among these four megatrends identified by Richard Dobbs, James Manyika, and Jonathan Woetzel is something they call "the age of urbanization."

Most of us probably have heard of this trend, especially pronounced in developing economies, as literally hundreds of millions of people are moving from rural areas to cities. The facts or projections relative to this trend are nicely summarized in the infographic below from McKinsey:

Emerging economies will grow 75% faster than developed ones by 2025? China will have 46 of the world's largest 200 cities in the same timeframe?

It's clear: excellence in penetrating developing markets, using supply chain as a key tool, and figuring out urban logistics will be a key determinant of company success over the next 20 years or more.
