Your Guide to Complying with the Safe Food For Canadians Regulations (SFCR)

May 2019

What is SFCR?

The Safe Food for Canadians Act (SFCA) requires that most food companies in Canada — and companies that export to Canada — comply with the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR).

Part 5 of the SFCR deals specifically with traceability, defined by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) as the tracking of food forward to the immediate customer and back to the immediate supplier.

Under Part 5, any person or company who imports, exports, or interprovincially trades meat or produce to another person or company must prepare and keep documents that specify a lot code or another unique identifier enabling the food to be traced forward and backward along the supply chain.

Next, in the case of pre-packaged food that is not packaged at retail, the name and principal place of business of the person or company by or for whom the food was manufactured, prepared, produced, stored, packaged or labelled — barring some minor exceptions — must be labeled with a unique lot code.

See the SFCR Regulations here.

How Do I Comply?

The SFCR is complex, but iTradeNetwork’s traceability suite — iTracefresh — provides solutions for companies at any step of the SFCR-compliant supply chain.

For trace-forward and trace-backward capability:

Label | Suppliers can enable efficient and accurate case-level recall abilities and digital case data capture, all configurable to any workflow.

Transit | Buyers can easily and simply receive traceability information and PO data at the time of shipment by utilizing PTI Palletized ASNs in real-time at the loading dock.

For pre-packaged traceable products:

Item | Suppliers can engage consumers at the shelf by delivering farm-to-fork visibility with customizable codes unique to individual, pre-packaged products.
