The US Bureau of Labor Statistics keeps detailed track of manufacting jobs. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis turns some of that data into nice charts.
See below a graph of all US manufacturing jobs since the late 1930s:

As can be seen, all manufacturing jobs peaked in the late 1970s at about 19 million, then started a long decline before reaching a sort of a bottom in 2010. Some modest increase since then, to the present total of 12.9 million, including white and blue collar jobs.
