by Tom Gregorchik I was recently asked a simple question during an interview: “Where do you see supply chain in 2030?”. And when I thought of the future of supply chain, I thought to myself that the year 2030 is 14 years from now—the same 14-year span of when I started in supply chain. There were many different stories that were shared on their successes in all industries, and the theme of the conference always came back to where supply chain will be in 2030.

Measuring Up?

The average manufacturing company’s supply chain organization is 15 years old. The supply chain is a complex system with finite, and non-linear relationships between supply chain metrics that drive balance sheet results. We find that companies can improve one, but not two of the metrics. Teams struggle to drive improvement in both metrics at the same time. Analysis of Performance and Improvement by Industry on the Supply Chain Metrics That Matter.

P&G’s rate of improvement on the Metrics That Matter was lower than the peer group. In this period, a combination of rapidly increasing stock prices, market confidence on future profits, and speculation in individual stocks, made investors overlook traditional metrics in favor of confidence in future technological advancements. They got good at Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) and tied the output to decisions on what to make in contract manufacturing.

While it is nice to envision supply chains in 2020 or 2030 the truth is; for many manufacturing businesses, discussions about future supply chain innovations, often leads to a “yeah.right,” smirk by supply chain executives – this with good reason. Most manufacturing businesses still, face day-to-day supply chain optimization issues that span from having manual processes to having difficulties in syncing up projected sales with actual market conditions.
