Hurricane Matthew Affects Spot Rates and Freight Volumes

Shippers paid more to move freight ahead of the storm, and then load posts dropped when the affected markets locked down at the end of the week. Reefer load posts spiked in Charlotte last week ahead of Hurricane Matthew. Spot market rates were up last week, but volumes fell. Lots of those loads were heading to Atlanta and Florida.

Demand Heats Up for Vans and Reefers

End-of-quarter and pre-holiday freight was even stronger than expected last week in Atlanta , Charlotte and Memphis , which were the top three markets for outbound loads on DAT load boards. Northbound lane rates continue to rise out of Atlanta, Memphis and Charlotte, for both vans and reefers.

Spot Market Kept Growing in October

Van freight didn't see a big boost in the last full week of October, and rates on the 100 highest-traffic lanes were mostly neutral. Van rates barely moved on a majority of the 100 highest-volume lanes last week, but pricing stabilized in Charlotte after some up-and-down weeks following Hurricane Matthew.
