The methodology did not include a peer group analysis, and I strongly felt that chemical, retail, and telecommunications companies should not be compared in the same analysis. I recently moved to Arizona and traded my lawnmower and snow-shovels for a salt-water pool. Someone also has to add the appropriate amounts of chemicals. Changing one chemical level can lead to adverse changes in other chemical levels. I just need to invest in the sensors and the chemical injectors.

For high-tech and semiconductors in particular, the risk of a factory fire is high due to the highly flammable materials used in semiconductor manufacturing: combustible plastic materials, flammable and pyrophoric chemicals, and high-voltage electrical power. To make matters worse, semiconductors must be made in an ultra-clean environment.

A chemical company just should not be compared to a high-tech company using this methodology. This week, I am finalizing an agreement with Arizona State University to fund a PHD student in statistics under the guidance of George Runger to try to finish the work. Most readers of this blog know how I feel about the Gartner Top 25.

Take the chemical industry. The reason is that as a chemical company, they must run assets, and the methodology penalizes companies with deep asset strategies. This culminated over the course of the last four months into a methodology that we developed along with the Operations Research team at Arizona State University.
