Rates and Demand Are Still High for Refrigerated Freight

Those, combined with the supply chain disruptions caused by the hurricanes, have led to tight capacity in southern Idaho, and outbound rates continue to climb out of Twin Falls. Florida rates continued to slide: Miami to Atlanta dropped 40¢ to $1.29/mile, Grand Rapids to Philadelphia dropped 58¢ to $3.52/mile.

Here's some local color: Demand for vans increased in Idaho last week, especially in Twin Falls. Atlanta rates also slipped, although rates held up well in other regional hubs, including Memphis and Charlotte. TriHaul: Chicago - Atlanta - Decatur - Chicago. Not yet, anyway. Rapid City , SD was another Hot Market.

Where Did Reefer Rates Rise the Most Last Week?

Load counts are still high in Southern Idaho , and in general, westbound and southbound lanes were up, while eastbound lanes tended to have lower rates. Mexican imports boosted reefer rates 12¢ on the lane from Nogales, AZ, to Los Angeles to $1.84/mile. Denver to Salt Lake City climbed 15¢ to $1.80/mile.

Apart from Idaho, most of the seasonal action is in imports. McAllen to Atlanta prices also slipped, but that lane may pick up this week in the run-up to Super Bowl Sunday. In the Northeast, there's a lot of action in the Philadelphia market, where produce arrives from South America. That additional demand drove rates up to $2.93

Reefer demand dips, but fall harvests await

Rates already started rising last week in Idaho and Michigan , and more loads moved out of a few of the top markets — namely Atlanta , Green Bay and Twin Falls. Reefer rates on the lane from Grand Rapids to Atlanta surged 47¢ to $3.58/mile. Grand Rapids to Madison, WI, increased 41¢ to $3.43/mile.

Mid-May Spot Market Has Been a Mixed Bag

In the South, volumes were up nearly 9% in Charlotte , but down 3% in Atlanta. Atlanta to Charlotte rose 23¢ to an average of $2.40/mile. Potato shipments have also picked up out of Idaho , and California volumes are expected to push the segment through the 4th of July. Last week was a mixed bag, though.

Van and Reefer Load Volumes Rise, as Flatbeds Falter

It's easier to find a load in the biggest freight markets, including Chicago - Joliet , Atlanta , Dallas , and Houston , but outbound van rates trended down in most of those markets last week. FLATBED TRENDS: Load-to-truck ratios are high for flatbeds in the Southeast, but rates are drifting down in Atlanta and Memphis.
