Outbound prices slipped lower for flatbeds in Baltimore and Savannah, which could be related to port traffic. Hot Markets. Reno to Seattle gained 34¢ to $3.06/mile.

Baltimore rates rose sharply after Irma, likely due to ocean cargo that was diverted from Miami and Savannah. The lane from Baltimore to Charlotte jumped up 60¢ last week to $2.22/mile, Rates are dropping on a handful of lanes heading INTO Baltimore, however. mile, but volumes are trending back down now.

On the other hand, flatbed prices trended down in a handful of key markets, including Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Cleveland, Pittsburgh , and Roanoke. Baltimore to Springfield, MA slid 21¢ to $4.04/mi. Lanes with falling rates included: Pittsburgh to Houston fell 25¢ to $2.23/mi.

WHAT'S HOT – Rates were on the rise last week in two Atlantic seaport markets: Baltimore and Jacksonville. Instead, there were almost 50% more loads last week than the week before, and rates are holding up at the highest levels in two years. Two Southeastern freight hubs, Atlanta and Memphis , also got a big boost.

Gains out of Las Vegas and Jacksonville, FL , suggest that construction equipment and material are on the move. Roanoke to Baltimore soared to $3.58/mile. The oil industry has also fueled the Texas markets: Rates were higher last week out of Dallas and Fort Worth , while Houston held firm.

Rates are up for flatbeds in some Sun Belt markets, particularly Jacksonville in the Southeast, Dallas and neighboring Fort Worth, plus Phoenix. The Midwest is quiet, however, with weak volume out of Rock Island, IL, as well as Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Baltimore to the east.

Miami to Baltimore also jumped up 21¢ to $1.75/mile. Outbound rates in the past month have surged in Birmingham, Phoenix, Jacksonville, and Los Angeles , and last week saw a big uptick in prices out of Rock Island, IL. Shipments out of the Santa Maria District also pushed rates up out of the Fresno market.
