Those increases in truck freight were small compared to Seattle’s, which tells us that we could see a surge of van freight out of California this week and next. The lane from Dallas to Denver shot up 53¢, to $2.58/mile. California lane rates had some dramatic increases: Sacramento to Portland, OR, soared 91¢ to $3.78/mile.

Cargo ships were re-routed or delayed en route to and from ports from Savannah to Baltimore. to Atlanta, rates rose on a handful of other lanes originating in the West: Seattle to Eugene , OR, added 9¢ to $3.07/mile. Seattle to Los Angeles also rose 9¢ to $1.48/mile. Rates rose 8¢ to $2.18/mile lost traction.

A couple lanes with falling prices: Reno to Seattle was down 98¢ to $2.41/mile, mile, a sign that lumber shipments out of the Seattle area are balancing things out. Ontario, CA, to Seattle tumbled 68¢, but also was still high at $3.50/mile. The biggest drop last week was on the lane from Lakeland, FL, to Baltimore , which dropped 69¢ to $2.23/mile. Prices continued to slide out of Florida and California , with the exception of Sacramento. Miami to Elizabeth, NJ, also fell 54¢ at $1.90/mile.

Seattle rates continue to fall seasonally, slipping another 4% lower last week. Seattle to Eugene, OR dropped 40¢ to $2.61/mile. Miami to Baltimore slipped 75¢ to a more-normal $2.13/mile. There may be shipments of support supplies needed prior to construction materials for the oilfields and pipelines.

And even Seattle had a regional spike: Rates on the lane to Eugene, OR, were up 23¢ to $2.31/mile. Miami to Baltimore was up 35¢ to $2.63/mile. Rates were up on 70 of the top 100 van lanes.

The slow and steady trend of more gaining lanes than falling took a step back last week. On the top 100 van lanes, 50 were down, 41 were up, and 9 were neutral.

Rates got the biggest boosts out of Memphis, Atlanta and Seattle. The biggest gains were in Atlanta, Memphis, and Baltimore. It closed the week strong, too, and the load-to-truck ratio hit 5.6 on Friday, compared to the 2.9 van loads per truck for the rest of the country. Buffalo has had a lackluster month.
