Garment Workers in BRICS Countries Cannot Afford Basic Quality of Life

Material Handling & Logistics

It would cost $10 billion to reach a ‘fair’ level of pay for BRIC workers in the Western European clothing supply chain. Our analysis provides a robust basis for arguing that BRIC pay in the Western European clothing supply chain is unfair,” the report concluded.

Handfield’s Supply Chain Analytics Predictions for 2014

Supply Chain View from the Field

We just finished hosting over 150 executives at our Supply Chain Resource Cooperative, with a theme on Supply Chain Analytics. As 2013 comes to a close, here are some of my thoughts regarding the supply chain trends we are likely to see emerge in 2014. Here is what I expect to see next year: Global supply chain footprints will continue to expand. Increased Globalization Brings Increased Risks of Supply Disruption.

Behind the world’s shimmering cars: The supply chain struggle

DELMIA Quintiq

This, in turn, has turned the supply chain into a competitive weapon to either support sales growth or protect margins through efficiencies. Supply chain complexity, in all its aspects, should be seen as a challenge to manage and potentially exploit, not as a problem to be eliminated.

Global Luxury Management “Lifestyle” brands require push supply chain design customization

Supply Chain View from the Field

In this environment, the supply chain and logistics task becomes even more complex, as it involves delivering and fulfilling product and service support to deliver a lifestyle “vision” around the world. In this environment, supply chains are not “pull”, but rather “push” in nature. Designers decide on a life style concept, and plan on what they are going to sell – which is a PUSH based supply chain.

Supply Chain Outlook 2015: Looking to the Future

Supply Chain View from the Field

I presented at Supply Chain Outlook 2015, an event hosted by the Supply Chain Management Review in Chicago on Monday morning. It was also pointed out that the supply chain for manufacturing in America also has to be re-created – many of the suppliers in these industries are no longer there. Overall – a great kickoff for Supply Chain Management Review’s first conference.

The Emerging Supply Chain Wars

In the new book “Connectography: Mapping the Future of Global Civilization, author Parag Khanna discusses the concept of the “new supply chain wars”. Central to his argument is the notion that global supply chains have become more complex, but have also merged into a comprehensive whole. If this is the case, then technology wont eliminate supply chains, but will “morph” them, as raw materials such as organic matter or plastics will need to “feed” 3D printing.

Why Global Trade Agreements must be part of your supply chain planning: Guest Post by Tim Barnes

Tim is a global supply chain executive originally from Australia, who has been studying the evolution of the Trans Pacific Partnership closely, and is writing a book on the subject. However, as some expert’s estimate, around 2% of supply chain professionals time is spent thinking about account free trade agreements, and how they can utilize the provisions to take full advantage of efficiency and cost reductions, and to identify areas that could result in higher COGS.

Bricks Matter: ongoing evolution of supply chain management

Supply Chain Movement

In view of the crucial role supply chain management has played in companies’ success in the past decade, it is surprising that so few books have been published on the topic, especially when compared to the huge number of books appearing on marketing and social media at the moment. Examining the past 30 years of supply chain management plus looking ahead to the future, this book is far from boring; at worst, it is a little on the long side.

Collaboration: The New Battle Cry of Supply Chain

If the mantra of the real estate industry is “Location, Location, Location”, the new mantra of supply chain executives is fast becoming “Collaboration, Collaboration, Collaboration”. Take for example the BRIC nations and the impact this region has across the global economy.

Supplier Financial Health: Don’t Wait for the Worst, Reach out and Talk!

Supply Chain View from the Field

Supply management research has established the axiom that firms are no longer operating independently, but indeed are part of an extended global network that is subject to high degrees of volatility, increasing customer expectations, and is subject to major forms of disruption risk. However, what is not well understood is whether supply manager behaviors have shifted to reflect this broader paradigm shift.

Is Walmart Really Ready to Take on Logistics In India?

Supply Chain View from the Field

The story highlights some of the findings of our recent global logistics study, which found that logistics infrastructure is one of the most challenging issues, particularly for retailers who are expanding into BRIC countries such as India. This is certainly the case illustrated by Walmart’s exploits in India, as a world-class supply chain confronts the realities of roads and transport conditions in India.

What’s New in 2015 for the supply chain world? See 2014?s predictions.

Supply Chain View from the Field

Global supply chain footprints will continue to expand. No question the global supply chain is still going strong. While it seemed like many companies would be moving more towards the BRIC countries, global events have proven this uptake to be relatively slow. So while globalization hasn’t gone away, people are re-thinking global supply chain outsourcing, particularly as wages and risks are both rising in global emerging countries.

Innovation Leadership in the Middle of Organization Change at Biogen

The approaches were all diverse, but all demonstrated incredibly novel ideas that will impact the end to end supply chain, from the customer’s customer to the supplier’s supplier. As a supply chain professor, I was enthralled by learning more about how companies in the biotechnology space are working to create new, highly novel approaches in this new era of therapeutic medicine.

“The Procurement Value Proposition”: Guest Post by Gerard Chick Part 1

Supply Chain View from the Field

I believe that the evolution of supply side management has placed procurement at the strategic heart of many organisations and that some or all of what follows will become common place over the next decade or so as the sustainability of the organisation as an entity becomes paramount. So will supply management still concentrate on cost savings or will contribution to revenue growth take over?

Bangladesh Working Conditions: A Human Rights Issue? Or a Supplier Capacity Issue?

Supply Chain View from the Field

A recent discussion with supply chain executives in the apparel industry reveal that the problem is a tricky one to solve – and may be a function of other decisions being made by apparel manufacturers that have nothing to do with labor human rights in the supply chain. Better supply chain capacity planning, supply and demand management, and improved collaborative forecasting is the real culprit. Do YOU know who is in YOUR supply chain?

Random thoughts on “close-to-home-shoring” based on my travels last week…

Supply Chain View from the Field

Early in the week I sat in on a lecture given by Clay Christenson (from Harvard Business School) to a number of senior supply chain executives at a gathering at the new 7 World Trade Center in New York. Last week I had the opportunity to travel first to New York and then Monterrey, Mexico, and speak with a number of people to explore perspectives on the current economic situation we find ourselves in.

The Growing Fragmentation of Global Trade: Guest Post by Tim Barnes

Globalization and supply chains have been tied at the hip over the course of history. Supply chains naturally take advantage of efficiency and cost advantages and over the centuries, as transportation methods, technology and global knowledge improved, there has been a drive to take advantage of each and every step. So how do global supply chain executives plan for the future?

Growing the logistics network means building partnerships with the right people

Supply Chain View from the Field

Large BRIC country governments have recognized their power in the channel, and have raised the stakes for import and export requirements and regulation. BRIC countries all have significant import challenges. The only way to do that effectively is to eliminate touch points into the supply chain going in to that country – what we call the direct chain. The Drive To 100% Bio-based Plastic Bottles

When Coca Cola set about thinking about how to drive sustainability into their supply chain, they recognized from the outset that the entire end to end life cycle of a bottle of Coke needed to be considered. Growing beverage consumption in emerging markets of BRICS is expected to drive bio based PET market growth. We are working hard to enable other companies to come into the space and benefit from the PET supply chain that we are creating, and allowing access to technology.
