Drayage Companies in California Must Meet New CARB Requirements as of January 1st

Thu, Dec 14, 2023 @ 08:03 AM / by Weber Logistics

With the new California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations taking effect on January 1st, 2024, it's crucial for businesses to ensure their drayage providers are compliant. These regulations aim to significantly reduce emissions from heavy-duty vehicles, including drayage trucks, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment.

About CARB

Under the federal Clean Air Act of 1963, California can – and does – determine its own environmental regulations through CARB. California’s CARB regulations are often stricter than federal standards and are generally more challenging (and expensive) to meet than environmental regulations of other states.

New 2024 Requirements for Drayage Trucks

  • CARB2010 Model-Year Engine Standard: Starting January 1st, 2024, all drayage trucks operating in California must have a 2010 model year engine standard or newer. This means older trucks will no longer be allowed to operate, necessitating an upgrade or replacement.
  • Zero-Emission Powertrain by 2035: In a further commitment to environmental sustainability, all drayage trucks must operate a zero-emission powertrain by January 1st, 2035. This means transitioning to electric or other clean-energy technologies.

Compliance is Key

Choosing a CARB-compliant drayage provider is no longer optional; it's essential. Non-compliant companies risk penalties, delays, and even operational shutdowns. Therefore, it's crucial to verify your provider's compliance before January 1st and ensure it is actively working towards the 2035 zero-emission deadline.
