And second, to avoid running out of in-demand products, the shipper would have to stock more inventory as a buffer for unpredictable demand during those 11 days. On the West Coast, carriers might need to offer selective discounts to hold on to traffic, but will need to do so wisely, since a large chunk of time-sensitive cargo will probably continue to move through the West Coast, with or without discounts.

There have been numerous articles published on this topic in various trade journals showing how almost everyone in the supply chain is being impacted by this congestion. Robinson and other Beneficial Cargo Owners (BCOs) participated to ensure that customers’ voices are heard. Due to a possible strike over the USWC, most retailers took precautions and have been moving a high level of inventory replenishment in preparation for a robust year-end shopping season.
