The UP stopped moving containers for a week in SoCal for boxes moving to Chicago. Rail dwell time in SoCal is around two weeks, and rail dwell time in Chicago is 2-3 weeks. Due to the UP not moving containers, we are seeing the number of vessels at anchor rise again. .

For example, we produce in Vietnam and China. Vietnam is a low-cost market to produce products. Our factory is efficient; yet, it costs us more to manufacture the product in Vietnam because of a lack of local raw materials – compared to manufacturing it in the US, shipping it, and paying duties on a landed basis.

Haiti grew all of its own rice, until the World Bank told them to take the tariff off – and once they removed the tariff – they could buy it cheaper from the US and Vietnam than they could grow it in the country. The problem became poverty was increased in Haiti, because they lost the income they had enjoyed from growing rice.
