Van freight stabilizes in early October

Rates are rising from Seattle to California, but otherwise the picture is weak for pricing. Here are two lanes worth noting: Denver to Oklahoma City jumped 12¢ to a not-so-hot $1.43/mile. Traditional backhaul markets like Denver and Seattle held up, and Los Angeles continued to see price increases over the past month.

West Coast Heats Up for Van Freight

For van freight, we’re starting to see hot markets shift westward, with big rate increases out of Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver and Stockton, CA. Outbound van rates have soared more than 40% in Seattle in the past month. Seattle to Eugene, OR surged 70¢ to an average of $3.14/mile. RISING LANES. mile average.

Stockton volumes were also up sharply, but Seattle volumes rose most, 34%, and are expected to rise for the next several weeks as they work through the bottleneck of vessels in Puget Sound. Both the Seattle and Los Angeles markets saw some double digit rate increases: Seattle to Eugene, OR moved up 26¢ to $2.88/mile.

Spot Market Van Rates Soared in September

Chicago prices also continued to climb: Chicago to Denver added 38¢ at $3.05/mile. One exception was out West: Rates on the lane from Seattle to Salt Lake City gained 36¢ at $2.25/mile. For carriers, van loads coming out of Seattle often pay backhaul rates, but rates have been on the rise on a few lanes in recent weeks.
