The Importance of Demand Planning

Logility

With increasing frequency, I have noticed blog posts touting the position that ‘demand planning is dead.’ Why? Roses Are Cheap on Valentine’s Day — Because of Where They Come From

Supply Chain Brain

Many are pulled into warehouses by horses, chilled to sleep in refrigeration rooms, and then packed with other flowers onto planes — 1.1 million at a time — to be sold in the United States. It’s peak season for a massive Colombian industry that shipped more than 4 billion flowers to the United States last year — or about a dozen for every U.S. r

How Many Truck Drivers Are There?

Talking Logistics

I am so confused. A few weeks ago, I revisited the age-old driver shortage question (see Truck Driver Shortage: Getting Better, Worse, or No Problem at All? ). As the title of my post suggests, the answer to the question depends on who you ask, when you ask it, and what data you use. Speaking of data, let’s start with a basic question: How many truck drivers are there in the United States?

Rail Competition Takes a Bite Out of Van Rates

DAT Solutions

Spot market rates continue to decline seasonally, as volumes for February are slightly off compared to 2017. That loss can be attributed to competition from the railroads, as overall shipments are up slightly year over year, but more shippers have shifted freight over to rail intermodal. In the fourth week of the year, intermodal shipments were up 6% compared to the same period last year, and that extra competition has helped push truckload rates lower.

ELDs Add to Pressure on Driver Pay and Truckload Costs

DAT Solutions

Shippers are already paying more, sometimes a lot more, to move freight, and driver compensation will soon follow that upward trajectory, as relationships between carriers and their workers are reshaped by the ELD mandate and industry expansion. This is all playing out against a backdrop that includes steep rate increases on the spot market. DAT’s spot van rates for January illustrate the intensity, with the national average up 35% year over year to an all-time record.
