The Future of Touch Panel Technology

The capacitive touch panel is widely used onto the smartphones since Apple launched iPhone 4. Over the years, the touch panel is growing faster than we had expected.

There are quite a few new developments in the touch panel field. And some of them might be the turning point of our daily life at some point. Read on and check them out.

1. New material

Normally, a touch panel contains 3 pieces of glasses.

Nowadays, many manufacturers are now testing plastic instead of glass. In general, the hardness and rigidity levels of glass are higher than plastic. But glass can be easily broken or deformed by extrusion.

Therefore, the flexible touch panel uses special plastic.

Even though the rate of the finished product of flexible touch panels used is quite low (less than 20%), we believe in the future, the touch panel can be folded into your pocket or be designed to any shape.

2. New structure and industrial structure

Compared with the traditional external structure, the embedded structure has the advantages that only 2 layers of ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) glasses are required. In this way, the material cost is reduced, the transmittance is improved, and the lightness is thinner.

The industrial touch screen industry is similar to the TFT (Thin-Film Technology) industry.

These two industries account for a large proportion (around 65%) in the value chain. The two industries will always develop in a straight line. The touch screen group and the TFT module are produced at the same time, which reduces the transportation cost of the module.

3. New tactile feedback technique

The continuous development of touch display technology brings people a convenient operation mode and good visual effect. However, they ignore the touch operation gives the user tactile feedback.

Nowadays, engineers use mechanical motors to generate vibration or motion, which can simulate the tactile effects such as beating, falling objects, and damping motion.

The development of more realistic haptic feedback technology can bring the new touch experience to users.

4. New multi-touch technology

In 2007, Apple’s multi-touch function through projected capacitive technology provided an unprecedented user experience.

At present, multi-touch technology has only been able to achieve multiple input modes of more than 5 points.

In the future, multi-touch technology will achieve more detailed screen object manipulation and more freedom of direction.

5. Under glass fingerprint identification

Face and fingerprint verification have been employed in various biometric applications. Not like face verification, you still have to touch ‘the glass’ to do the fingerprint verification.

Under glass fingerprint identification can give you a full-screen smartphone and other smart devices.

At present, although there are many types of touch technologies. Each technology has its own advantages and disadvantages. However, no one technology is perfect.

As the demand for touch technology continues to increase, a single touch technology will certainly not meet people’s needs.

So hybrid touch technology will certainly become one of the future development directions of the touch panel technology.
