Types of USB Cables & Media Cables

Electronic devices are necessities nowadays and have a big market. If you want to design some cool new phones or PCs, you’ll need to think about a major accessory, i.e., cables, of them, as wireless world is still in its infancy.

There are various utilities of cables (more about cable utilities). As for cables related to electronic devices, there are mainly two types: one type links peripheral devices such as keyboard and mouse. This is what we call USB cables. Another type links media devices like projector or voice box, and we call them media cables. Let’s see what you need to know about them.

USB cables

USB cable is what we call the cable that connects peripheral electronic devices.

USB 2.0 cables, USB 3.0 cables, USB-C cables and micro-USB cables are some of the most commonly seen options when you’re deciding what your product to be like. So, how should you choose?

Hope the following information about each of them helps you make the call.

USB 2.0 cable

  • The most widely used cable in market;
  • Meets the general requirements of the majority of electronic devices;
  • Low price;
  • An older standard and relatively slow transmission speed.That said, if the product you want to produce facing the mass market, USB 2.0 cable will be the best choice.

USB 3.0 cable

  • The latest standard released since 2008;
  • Iterate to 3.2 already;
  • Transmission rate is much higher than its last generation;
  • Higher costs;
  • Backward compatibility, which means that if you choose the new USB 3.0 port, it’ll support USB 2.0 devices with the corresponding connector.

To conclude, if your products are for geeks and upscale market, don’t hesitate to use USB 3.0 ports and cables for the best transmission speed and experience available currently.

USB-C cable

USB-C stands for USB Type-C, a new shape of USB connector.

  • Smaller;
  • Thinner;
  • Has a key feature of full duplex, enabling us to get rid of flipping around the connector when using it;
  • Supports USB PD (Power Delivery) specification, an extension for increased power, which ensures the strong ability of USB-C cable in transmitting energy;
  • Support a variety of different protocols such as VGA, HDMI and DisplayPort when in “alternative modes”, which comes with more convenience and better integrity.

Micro-USB

Micro-USB is a basic USB 2.0 or 3.0 cable type with a smaller connector fit for phones or mini devices. It is an alternative choice for low-end phone.

Media cable

As mentioned above, media cable is another major type of cables.

There are fewer categories of them: VGA cable, DVI cable, HDMI cable and DP (DisplayPort) cable. The four shortenings are all media interfaces rolled out in turn.

Among these four types of cables, VGA cable delivers analog signal (will encounter distortion) while the other three deliver digit signal; and DVI cable deliver only video signal while the others deliver both video and audio signals.

The media quality that these types of cables can provide increased gradually, so do their prices. On high-end devices, two or more female jack of these cables often show together. Another solution of female jacks is using a USB-C jack and a dock, then the device itself can have a better integrity.

One more thing you have to know about HDMI is there’s a copyright cost for HDMI manufacturer. It’s 10000 dollars per year plus fee on every single product.

By the way, the jacket of cables above is usually plastic. You can choose nylon fabric to increase the resistant ability of tear and corrosion.
