What's the level of adoption of alternative fuel trucks in US freight carriers?
Not very much, according to new research from the American Research Institute (ATRI), a part of its annuall analysis of what it costs to operate a truck in the the US. (See What does it Cost to Operate a Truck in the US?)
As seen in the graphic low from the report, alternative fuel usage is very low:

Only 7% of respondents used some form of alternative fuel in at least one truck in 2021. Of all alternative fuel types, compressed natural gas (CNG) has the highest adoption rate: 5.9% of respondents had at least one CNG-fueled truck.
The report also noted that the level of alternative fuel adoption remains limited; most fleets that use alternative fuels in the chart do so only in a very small number of trucks. For example, while there is increased focus on battery electric vehicles, only 0.048% of all trucks in this year’s data were battery electric.
And 96% of all sampled trucks using alternative fuels belong to just
three fleet respondents.
