Reefer Freight Market Still Has a Few Hot Spots

July is the in-between season for refrigerated ("reefer") freight. Freight volume continued to cool off for reefers last week, but some pockets of high demand remain in New Mexico, Arkansas and the Lower Midwest, as shown in this Hot States Map for the week of July 19-25, 2015, below. Outbound rates even lost 6¢ per mile in Fresno, CA, a major reefer market where freight availability was on the upswing last week.

Van Freight Rates Fall 2¢, but Demand Is Up in the Northwest

Load-to-truck ratios were high in New Mexico, as shown below by the dark red area in the Hot States Map, but the number of loads there is still relatively low. Rates are derived from DAT RateView and are based on actual rate agreements between freight brokers and carriers. Demand for reefers in the Pacific Northwest has also boosted van demand in that area , since reefers are competing less for van loads in places like Idaho and Eastern Oregon.

Self-driving truck company TuSimple wins USPS contract

TuSimple will run a series of its self-driving trucks for 22 hours each, which includes overnight driving, along the I-10, I-20 and I-30 corridors to make the trip through Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. TuSimple has won a contract with the United States Postal Service (USPS) to perform five round trips, for a two-week pilot, hauling USPS trailers more than 1,000 miles between the Postal Service's Phoenix, Arizona and Dallas, Texas distribution centres.

Currently, this has not made a substantial impact on the freight market, but we are seeing signs that the industry is beginning to recover. Additionally, according to Freight Waves, “outbound tender rejections have increased week-over-week for the first time since the OTRI peaked at 19.25% on March 28.”. Pacific Northwest Heats Up for Vans and Reefers

The Pacific Northwest is heating up , with high demand for vans and reefers, and not enough trucks to haul the seasonal freight. Load-to-truck ratios were also high in North Dakota and New Mexico, as indicated by the dark blue areas on this Hot States Map for the week of September 6 - 12, but there were not enough loads available to make the trip worthwhile. Rates are derived from DAT RateView , and are based on actual rate agreements between freight brokers and carriers.

But van load availability returned to mid-November levels last week, as a 25% decline in load posts reversed a big, post-Thanksgiving gain in spot market freight. A shortage of trucks yielded a high load-to-truck ratio that also turned the map red in Wyoming and Maine, despite low freight volume, and a brief surge in New Mexico was not generating any more new loads this week. Big freight-producing states are affected, including California, Texas and Florida.

Van Rates Decline in 3 Biggest Freight Markets. If you're looking only at load-to-truck ratios on the map above, you'd be pointing your reefer toward New Mexico or Arkansas right now. National average van rates are sliding, but they’re still a few cents above the June average, so the typical mid-July slump isn’t as bad for some truckers as it was in previous years.
