Freight markets are heating up in the Sun Belt. Flatbeds saw rising freight volume and rates in the Southwest and a handful of Southeastern markets. Flatbed freight is strongest in the Southeast region, but not in the usual locations. Outbound rates fell in key Northern markets, including Chicago , Denver , and Philadelphia.

Amazon has reportedly hired executives with experience marketing air cargo assets, sources told Bloomberg, to sell capacity on deadhead return flights, for example. The company launched Amazon Air in 2016, prompting rampant speculation it was chasing much-larger UPS and FedEx fleets for dominance in retail/ecommerce air freight services.

Outbound rates increased in key California markets, including Sacramento, where rates rose 14¢ last week, to an average of $2.20 Twin Falls, Idaho is a great source for outbound reefer loads, prior to Thanksgiving. Other Hot Markets include Albuquerque, Grand Rapids and Little Rock. and Canada.
