Reefers Gain Momentum, Especially in Georgia

Georgia beat out Texas to become the number-one state for reefer loads last week, with California as a distant third. A lot of that produce originates in the Tifton and Macon markets in Southern Georgia, and is distributed out of Atlanta. Chicago and Philadelphia also got a boost last week.

Vans and Reefers Have a Friend in California

Load-to-truck ratios are way up in the Golden State for vans and reefers, and there are more loads available there right now than in any state except Texas and Georgia. In fact, California was 4th for reefer loads , behind (1) Texas, (2) Florida, and (3) Georgia. Outbound averages fell in N ogales and Fresno , but that had more to do with a change in where the freight was going.

A mid-March freeze killed a lot of fruit in Georgia and the Carolinas , which has affected reefer load counts. Shipments out of the Santa Maria District also pushed rates up out of the Fresno market. The backhaul lane from Philadelphia to Charlotte added 15¢ to $1.46/mile, Miami to Baltimore also jumped up 21¢ to $1.75/mile.
