Spring surge delayed again

Thanksgiving surge boosts reefer prices; van freight heads east

There has been a strong freight surge moving from Los Angeles toward the East, which is causing higher outbound volumes in cities like Chicago , Columbus and Memphis. The main driver of demand continues to be the Los Angeles freight market. Let’s look at some lanes: Los Angeles to Atlanta jumped 20¢ to $2.43/mile.

Spring freight rates: Stable or stuck?

Los Angeles and Seattle had slight bumps up in pricing, but nothing exceptional. Los Angeles to Atlanta added 8¢ to $1.58/mi. Fresno volumes were up, but other parts of California went softer. Fresno to Seattle lost 18¢ to $2.36/mi. Rising rates. Chicago to Allentown, PA gained 7¢ to $2.39/mi.

Reefers still waiting for spring

While the Lakeland, FL market was a big winner last week — gaining over 20% more volume — those gains were more than offset by a week-over-week slump in other major reefer markets, including Fresno, Nogales, Boise and much of the Midwest. The net result was that prices dropped 3¢ in March compared to the February average.

Storms put damper on spot rates

Load counts rose nearly 5% in Chicago and Houston , and more than 3% in the number one van market, Los Angeles. Freight volumes were up more than 20% in the Lakeland, Florida market, as well as in Sacramento and Fresno , California. Fresno to Denver surged 40¢ to $2.24/mi. Fresno to Boston gained 19¢ to $2.23/mi.

Reefer Demand Spikes During Inspection Blitz

We did get the expected bump in rates out of Fresno though, and California produce shipments are expected to remain strong at least until the 4th of July. A few lanes out of California crossed the $3 mark: The biggest jump in price was on the lane from Fresno to Denver , which surged 61¢ to $3.14/mile.
