There has been a strong freight surge moving from Los Angeles toward the East, which is causing higher outbound volumes in cities like Chicago , Columbus and Memphis. Western produce picked up in nearly every market, led by gains in Twin Falls, ID and Fresno in Central California. Fresno to Denver added 20¢ to hit $3.18/mile.

End-of-quarter and pre-holiday freight was even stronger than expected last week in Atlanta , Charlotte and Memphis , which were the top three markets for outbound loads on DAT load boards. Reefers were very active in Central California last week, as well, with increased volume from Fresno and a boost to outbound rates in Sacramento.

Retail freight is driving rates up in Memphis and Columbus , especially on lanes heading into the Northeast. Things are heating up in California, with lots of loads rolling out of Fresno , and a big rebound under way in Sacramento. A lot of truckers prefer to take those days off, and others lost time because of the inspections.

Memphis to Atlanta was up 13¢ at an average of $2.23/mile. Shipments out of the Santa Maria District also pushed rates up out of the Fresno market. Rates out of Memphis were down after a strong drop in volumes. Memphis to Dallas was down 25¢ to $2.54/mile. Miami to Baltimore also jumped up 21¢ to $1.75/mile.

The top 4 were the same as last week – Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston and Dallas – but Indianapolis edged out Memphis for the no. Out of California , volumes were flat, with higher load counts out of the Fresno area offset by declines farther south. Overall, per-day volumes in April were pretty much on par with March.

Memphis to Atlanta gained 13¢ to $2.37/mi. Rate increases were seen in Fresno, CA , and McAllen, TX , two of the nation's top produce markets. Late-season snowstorms may have slowed things down in the Midwest, but as you can see from the Hot States Map above, Texas is showing some life. Rising Rates.

Fresno and Sacramento have lots of loads, too. There's been a shortage of trucks in Arkansas , Mississippi and Alabama , and outbound rates are jumping in Charlotte , Atlanta and Memphis. Load availability soared in places like Denver and Memphis. Out of California, reefer loads paid less in Ontario and Fresno. Part of the uptick in loads was because people were back at work after taking time off for Thanksgiving, but the bigger driver was the economy -- especially e-commerce.

These "hot markets" may pay above-average rates for reefers: Albuquerque, NM; Lubbock, TX; Fayetteville, AR; Memphis and Nashville, TN; Cape Girardeau, MO; and Evansville, IN. Outbound rates even lost 6¢ per mile in Fresno, CA, a major reefer market where freight availability was on the upswing last week.

Memphis to Chicago was up 11¢ to $1.77/mile. Fresno to Denver is still well below summer pricing, but it picked up 21¢ to $2.14/mile On the top 100 van lanes, 62 paid better, while rates slipped on only 28 of them. The other 10 were neutral. Notable increases: Charlotte to Buffalo rates rose 15¢ to an average of $2.17/mile.
