Harvey is not the first lethal and damaging flood to hit Houston: Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 killed 41 and caused $9 billion in damage, as well as flooding in 2016 that shut down the city for days. Houston’s expansive sprawl lacks drainage systems and has ample bodies of water that are easily exacerbated by heavy rains.

The biggest spike was the lane from Chicago to Kansas City , which surged 49¢ up to $3.10/mile. Denver to Houston also took a 42¢ dive at $1.87/mile. Of the top 72 reefer lanes, 39 had rising rates, while 33 lanes were down. Chicago to Minneapolis also climbed 21¢ to $2.76/mile. Chicago to Denver soared 27¢ to $3.17/mile.

When I moved to Houston I did work with a company that was trying to create digital twins before the concept formally existed. This was back in 2001 when I started in Houston. Houston to Oklahoma City cooled, falling 15¢ to $1.73/mile. Texas mostly held steady last week, though volumes were off in Houston and rates dipped in Dallas. Rock Island to Kansas City was also up big at $2.81/mile. Chicago remains soft, and the lane to Buffalo fell 23¢ to $2.09.
