Load counts also continued to climb out of Dallas and Houston, as Texas works its way back to business as usual. Atlanta to Tampa was also up to $3.12/mile. That includes the Dallas to Houston lane, which fell another 54¢ but is still high at $2.96/mile. Houston to New Orleans also declined 19¢ to $2.42/mile.

Less than ten days after Hurricane Harvey, trucks are already moving freight out of Houston, with almost the same volume as before the storm. Harvey hit Houston on Friday evening, August 25, and hung over the metro area for days, dumping more than 50 inches of rain on Southeastern Texas and Southwestern Louisiana. It could take months.

Rebuilding Efforts Fuel Flatbed Demand

The flatbed traffic from Houston and along the Gulf Coast that stalled after the hurricane is also getting back to normal. It’s bounced back, since construction material from Houston is moving again, and that’s helped boost rates on the lane from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, which hit $3.52/mile mile on average last week.

Flatbed rates and volumes move upward

Plenty of flatbed markets in the South and East experienced rising prices, including Birmingham, Tampa, Atlanta, Savannah, Raleigh, Harrisburg, Dallas and Phoenix. Some of the lanes where rates increased last week included: Houston to Oklahoma City jumped 38¢ to $2.55/mi. Atlanta to Houston increased 26¢ to $2.33/mi.

Houston had the next-biggest increase at 3%. Rates were also weaker out of Atlanta and Tampa. Tampa to Atlanta is one of the weakest flatbed lanes, and the rate was down another 7¢ to just $1.39/mile. That pushed Baltimore rates up 10% higher last week as a result.
