Demand for vans continues to heat up on the West Coast, boosting load-to-truck ratios in California, Oregon, Idaho, and Utah. Some shippers preferred to deliver cargo there by sea, bypassing the Los Angeles-area ports altogether. Bucking the trend, volume declined last week on the number-one outbound lane from L.A. Hot Markets.

Mid-May Spot Market Has Been a Mixed Bag

No major van markets made any big moves in one direction or the other last week, but outbound rates in Houston and Los Angeles have both risen by 5% over the past month. Houston to Los Angeles dropped 10¢ to $1.21/mile. Los Angeles to Denver also jumped up 29¢ to $2.84/mile. mile on average.

Where Did Reefer Rates Rise the Most Last Week?

Mexican imports boosted reefer rates 12¢ on the lane from Nogales, AZ, to Los Angeles to $1.84/mile. Load counts are still high in Southern Idaho , and in general, westbound and southbound lanes were up, while eastbound lanes tended to have lower rates. Chicago to Kansas City also climbed 23¢ to $3.02/mile. FALLING.

California Reefer Freight Starts to Heat Up

Other markets to hit a lull last week included Miami, Southern Idaho, and Grand Rapids. While Sacramento to Portland was up, Los Angeles to Portland rates fell 31¢ to $2.77/mile. and Ontario. Across the country, 47 of the top 72 reefer lanes had higher rates compared to the previous week.

Pre-Christmas Demand Could Keep Reefer Rates High

Potato shippers have continued to be busy, and there were big increases on a couple of lanes out of Southern Idaho. Twin Falls to Los Angeles rates rose 39¢ to an average of $3.09/mile. All rates below include fuel surcharges and are based on real transactions between brokers and carriers.

Truckload Rates Finally Catch Up to Freight Volumes

Van rates were also trending up out of Philadelphia and Los Angeles. The big surprise was in Southern Idaho. Outbound rates in the past month have surged in Birmingham, Phoenix, Jacksonville, and Los Angeles , and last week saw a big uptick in prices out of Rock Island, IL. Cleveland was also showing signs of life.
