Truckload Rates Finally Catch Up to Freight Volumes

Memphis to Atlanta was up 13¢ at an average of $2.23/mile. The big surprise was in Southern Idaho. Rates out of Memphis were down after a strong drop in volumes. Memphis to Dallas was down 25¢ to $2.54/mile. We even saw rates increase on some major inbound lanes, which isn’t typical for this time of year.

Where to Find Flatbed Loads in the Off-Season

A shortage of trucks led to high load-to-truck ratios that turned entire states dark green in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, but there were not a lot of loads available in those areas. Rates trended up in Los Angeles, Rock Island, Cleveland and Memphis. Columbus and Cleveland, OH also offered plenty of loads.

Here's some local color: Demand for vans increased in Idaho last week, especially in Twin Falls. Atlanta rates also slipped, although rates held up well in other regional hubs, including Memphis and Charlotte. Not yet, anyway. But seasonal freight is coming soon, and it should provide welcome relief for carriers after a quiet winter.

FLATBED TRENDS: Load-to-truck ratios are high for flatbeds in the Southeast, but rates are drifting down in Atlanta and Memphis. REEFER TRENDS: Idaho lit up the Hot States map last week, and with good reason. HOT ROUND TRIP: Dallas to Houston and back, about 480 miles at an average rate of $1.92 per loaded mile.
