The West Coast is starting to see the freight that shipped from China after the Chinese New Year celebrations ended. port for those ships, and that freight was already being loaded onto trucks last week. Memphis to Indianapolis was more typical of retail lanes last week, falling 20¢ to $1.90/mile. We got a welcomed surge of spot market freight to close out July. It's unusual to see an uptick in volumes at this point in the summer, but the top 100 van lanes set all-time records for volumes last week.

Mid-May Spot Market Has Been a Mixed Bag

Memphis to Indianapolis isn't a lane we talk a lot about and it's rarely among the top gainers, but the average rate jumped up 12¢ last week to $1.89/mile. That comes despite uneven production out of Florida , shipping gaps in California , and a drop in volumes in markets near the Mexican border. Philadelphia to Miami fell 20¢ to $1.50/mile, but that should snap back with produce starting to ship out of Southern New Jersey.

Delayed Produce Could Lead to a Busy May

We’re hearing a lot about shipping gaps in California due to delays in planting because of an unusually wet winter, which explains the flat reefer volumes last week. The top 4 were the same as last week – Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston and Dallas – but Indianapolis edged out Memphis for the no. The end of the month didn’t bring the upward bump that we typically see when shippers try to move goods before closing their books.
