This map, prepared by Wonkblog and based on data by the National Bridge Inventory, shows every highway bridge in U.S. The relative lack of development in the West is instantly apparent, and if you look closely, you can make out such landmarks as the Mississippi River, the Appalachian mountains, and major cities like LA, Phoenix, and DC. Inventory is a buffer to uncertainty. And the longer the time, the more the uncertainty—and the more the inventory. Many companies struggle with inventories for multichannel sales. No matter what and how many channels, inventory should flow. From both a lean view and a liquidity view, inventory that sits does not create value. Insurance companies face this issue when selling disruption insurance, or when trying to convince manufacturers to reduce both the likelihood and impact of business interruptions through measures such as increasing inventory levels and developing alternative suppliers. The strategy incurs higher costs in terms of capital expenditures, labor, and inventory, but the payoff is superior service.
