As early as the 17th century, the Kra Isthmus in Thailand was contemplated as a shortcut between the Gulf of Thailand (Pacific Ocean) and the Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean). The canal would primarily help Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, and Vietnam because their maritime trade would have more pronounced time and cost savings while shipment.
