Flatbed freight regains footing in December

Raleigh and Las Vegas made gains in the past week, while volumes have been above par for the month in Memphis and Houston. Memphis to St. HOT MARKETS Savannah, GA , had a strong December, with flatbed rates up 11%. All rates below include fuel surcharges and are based on real transactions between brokers and carriers.

October Flatbed Rates Were Highest of the Year

The Memphis market posted the biggest gains for October, with outbound flatbed rates up 10%. Las Vegas to Sacramento averaged $3.19/mile. Volumes were up and down over the course of the month, though, as markets adjusted to constantly changing demand. Lots of major flatbed lanes were at or near $3/mile last week.

Flatbed Markets Adjust to Holidays, Regulations, and Weather

Las Vegas to Salt Lake City was up 28¢ to $2.71/mile. Dallas and Memphis had the biggest drops for flatbed rates last week, and both were negative for the month of December. Memphis to St. Over on the East Coast, the lane from Baltimore to Springfield, MA , surged 79¢ to $4.35/mile. Louis tumbled 74¢ to $3.20/mile.

Memphis to Atlanta was up 13¢ at an average of $2.23/mile. Out West, flatbed loads going from Las Vegas to Salt Lake Cit y rose 61¢ on average at $3.02/mile. Rates out of Memphis were down after a strong drop in volumes. Memphis to Dallas was down 25¢ to $2.54/mile.

Spring Came Early in These Freight Markets

Rates got the biggest boosts out of Memphis, Atlanta and Seattle. Memphis to Chicago was also up 12¢ at $1.76/mile. The biggest gains were in Atlanta, Memphis, and Baltimore. Memphis to Dallas was up â–²39¢ to $2.74/mile, It closed the week strong, too, and the load-to-truck ratio hit 5.6 mile on average.
