90-Second Update: The Internet of Things and the Logistics Industry

At an event in Dublin this week, a vision of the future was presented for the logistics and supply chain sectors, these are industries which, despite the constant chatter about optimization, streamlining and technology, remain bloated and inefficient.


At the Internet of Things (IoT) Summit in Dublin recently, GTR spoke with logistics and digitisation experts to discuss the impact this pervasive technology is having on an industry that craves efficiency.

Among the key points of feedback is that harvesting data from IoT devices is one thing, but  is almost useless unless you know what to do with it.

That’s why the likes of Cargotec and Evertracker, both featured in this video, are working to use artificial intelligence to leverage this abundance of data.

Using smart, predictive technology allows them to forecast events that may affect their supply chain operations, therefore improving efficiency.

The MPI Internet of Things Study, sponsored by BDO, evaluated the readiness of U.S. manufacturers to incorporate smart devices and embedded intelligence within their plants and into their companies’ products.

The study was conducted by The MPI Group and sponsored by BDO. In August and September 2015, 350 manufacturers participated in the study.
