The Suez Canal Company's shares were purchased by Great Britain in 1874, making it the sole owner. In order to manage the increasing containerized traffic, the rail line between the Atlantic and Pacific sides was reopened in 2002 under a private concession. It measures 4 to 24 km in breadth and 530 km in length.
