In the 1990s, purchasing managers were focusing on how to beat up their suppliers in order to buy cheaper. Meanwhile, salespeople for suppliers were trying to work around procurement. On every screen there were moving graphical visualizations of material inventory. Almost all the student projects were related to analytics.

Effectively, there is no database that permits reliable reporting on the volume of biobased products sold in the US or exported for global consumers. Since 2011, the USDA BioPreferred voluntary label has been in the market place and now has been applied to more than 20,000 certified products.
