The Suez Canal Company's shares were purchased by Great Britain in 1874, making it the sole owner. It is standard procedure to unload some Mediterranean-bound ships and use the Sumed pipeline to move the excess cargo. A major enlargement project that raised the capacity to around 100 transits per day was completed in 2014.
