The last two states added were Alaska and Hawaii in 1959. In addition, the United States has several permanently inhabited territories, including Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands and 11 uninhabited or sparsely inhabited territories, which are mostly small islands.
