It is standard procedure to unload some Mediterranean-bound ships and use the Sumed pipeline to move the excess cargo. The canal can accommodate up to 25,000 ships annually, or 78 ships on average per day, but in 2019 it handled about 18,800 ships, or 55 ships on average per day, or roughly 15% of the world's marine traffic.
