Houston rates jumped up 3% higher last week, and prices out of California are trending up due to tomato production. Historically, Houston to Chicago is a low-paying backhaul lane, so it’s rare to see the price jump up 13¢, especially when rates and volumes are also up out of Chicago. The other 17 held steady week-over-week.

Higher volumes in Southeast and Northeast have been driving the results, but higher volumes on a couple lanes associated with oil production have also been key: Pittsburgh to Houston , and Houston to El Paso , which is related to the drilling activity in the Permian Basin. Cleveland to Houston also dropped 31¢ to $1.62/mile.
