Load-to-truck ratios surged last week, as year-end demand and ongoing bad weather faced off against a relative shortage of trucks between two holidays. The head haul lane is the one with the higher rate in a round-trip route, because there is more demand for trucks from Chicago to Dallas than from Dallas to Chicago, for example.).

Lots of lanes were paying summer-like rates last week: Rock Island to Minneapolis was up ▲62¢ to an average of $2.67/mile. Out West, flatbed loads going from Las Vegas to Salt Lake Cit y rose 61¢ on average at $3.02/mile.
