As 2013 comes to a close, here are some of my thoughts regarding the supply chain trends we are likely to see emerge in 2014. Major growth strategies are driven by economic realities, currency movements, government regulations, or access to existing logistics networks. Not surprisingly, analytics is at the top of the list.

The i-parcel platform supports merchant’s websites with a local language welcome mat, fraud protection, fully-landed total prices (including customs duties and taxes) in local currency and numerous value enhancing features. It’s part of the reason why Descartes acquired ShipRush last year, a provider of e-commerce multi-carrier parcel shipping solutions. The fast growth of cross-border e-commerce is also a big reason why Pitney Bowes acquired Borderfree in May 2015 and why UPS acquired i-parcel in 2014. Cross-Border E-Commerce is Anything But Simple.

One of my predictions for 2016 was that cross-border e-commerce would become the next frontier for shipping and logistics growth. Shippers looking to make deliveries in Mr. Dearborn’s region can look up his firm, work out a price, and use Grand Junction’s platform to arrange shipping and tracking without hefty technology investments that Mr. Dearborn said companies like his simply can’t afford. More consumers are open to alternate delivery options.

In short, the increased threat of terrorism underscores the importance of taking a smarter approach to supply chain risk management , which was one of my predictions for 2014. It’s also important to note that shipping and aviation, two industries with significant greenhouse gas emissions, are not included in the COP21 agreement.
