There’s one sure-fire way to tell when someone has lived in Minneapolis long enough to be called a Minnesotan. Like visitors to the Mall of America, manufacturers looking to apply Lean principles start in the same place. Their “directory” is the 8 types of waste identified in Lean: Overproduction – Manufacturing more than is needed to fill customer orders. Inventory – Excess material and WIP. Each of these types of waste has at least one metric associated with it.
