Reefer Capacity Gets Tighter Ahead of Thanksgiving

Just like with dry van freight , reefer capacity tightened in the first week of November, meaning that shippers and brokers had a harder time finding trucks to move those reefer loads. The biggest drop-off last week was the lane from Grand Rapids to Cleveland , which plunged 54¢ to $3.16/mile.

Rates Rise Unexpectedly in Early August

Load posts edged down on DAT load boards , but national average rates rose 3¢ per mile for vans and flatbeds, while reefers added 4¢ Van Load Counts Stay Near All-Time High. Then 18% more flatbed loads moved last week than the week before, which is a surprise for this time of year. down 7¢ to 94¢ per mile.

Spring Came Early in These Freight Markets

fell â–¼9¢ to just $1.17/mile. The biggest spikes were on lanes out of Grand Rapids , but there aren’t a lot of loads on those lanes this time of year. Grand Rapids to Cleveland jumped up â–²50¢ to $3.34/mile. Even California joined the party last week, with higher than normal activity for this time of year.

As far as pricing goes, we usually consider it noteworthy when the average outbound rate in a major van market moves up or down 2%, and last week might’ve been the first time that no markets fit that description. Denver to Phoenix is still a weak lane at $1.20/mile, It hasn't yet been enough to put pressure on rates, though.
