A few flatbed markets saw some decent rate increases last week, including Houston , Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Houston to Los Angeles surged 46¢ to $2.24/mi. Best of all, it means the LA market is picking up). Las Vegas to Phoenix gained 42¢ to $2.97/mi. Usually it's L.A. Not a good rate.

The initial 10 cities for the Amazon service are Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Seattle and Washington D.C., with more to follow. It’s interesting that New York, the biggest market in the country and often the launch pad for same-day services, is not among them.

Load counts are up on DAT load boards , with more flatbed freight shipping to support the rebuilding and recovery efforts in areas affected by the storms. The flatbed traffic from Houston and along the Gulf Coast that stalled after the hurricane is also getting back to normal. Now it's looking like flatbed’s turn.

Houston rates jumped up 3% higher last week, and prices out of California are trending up due to tomato production. Houston to Oklahoma City cooled, falling 15¢ to $1.73/mile. Miami continued to ship lots of reefer roads, while Lakeland in the central part of the state joined the Florida parade. We expect load counts to pick up there and in the border market of McAllen, TX , with avocados shipping ahead of Cinco de Mayo.
