Van rates drop to 16-month low

The last time the average van rate was below $2 per mile was 16 months ago, in September 2017. There’s the normal seasonal slowdown that occurs around this time each year, but falling fuel surcharges and increased capacity in the spot market are adding to downward pressure on rates. Memphis to Indianapolis dipped 16¢ to $2.01/mile.

Brokers and shippers had a harder time finding trucks last week, so they paid a premium in most major markets and lanes. Rates were also way up on the lanes from Memphis to Indianapolis and Memphis to Dallas. to Denver rose 22¢ to $2.72/mile. Even Denver to Stockton was up 12¢ -- it still averaged just $1.21/mile,
