Van Rates Hit Highest Mark in 2 Years

Van rates drop to 16-month low

There’s the normal seasonal slowdown that occurs around this time each year, but falling fuel surcharges and increased capacity in the spot market are adding to downward pressure on rates. And rates out of Denver are holding up, for the second week in a row. Denver to Oklahoma City rates rose 13¢ to $1.34/mile.

Inspection Blitz Sends Freight Rates Skyward

Summer freight: Calm before the storm?

That extra capacity has taken some of the pressure off of pricing. Pipelines are filled to capacity the West Texas oilfields, leading to a slowdown in drilling. Dallas to Denver lost 25¢ at $2.59/mile. Memphis rates also fell sharply, with the lane to Indianapolis down 21¢ to $2.59/mile.

Mid-May Spot Market Has Been a Mixed Bag

Memphis to Indianapolis isn't a lane we talk a lot about and it's rarely among the top gainers, but the average rate jumped up 12¢ last week to $1.89/mile. Denver to Houston also fell11¢ to just $1.00/mile. With the recent weakness in the long haul van market, all this should add stability by absorbing capacity.

Spot Freight Volumes Get Welcomed Boost

That would’ve led to more reefer trucks competing for van freight, and the extra capacity kept rates down. Memphis to Indianapolis was more typical of retail lanes last week, falling 20¢ to $1.90/mile. Sacramento to Denver was up 26¢ to $2.55/mile. Weaker reefer load counts are likely to blame. Spot market demand heats up out West

Dallas to Denver fell 10¢ to $2.03/mi. But this year there's more capacity, both from additional trucks on the road and more efficient use of current equipment. Rock Island to Indianapolis dropped 53¢ $2.91/mi. Lanes that showed declines last week included: Chicago to Allentown dropped 12¢ to $2.57/mi.
