Just like with dry van freight , reefer capacity tightened in the first week of November, meaning that shippers and brokers had a harder time finding trucks to move those reefer loads. Out West, the extra-long haul from Fresno to Boston rose 29¢ to $2.41/mile. Chicago to Denver soared 27¢ to $3.17/mile.

That could have been a contributing factor to the tighter reefer truckload capacity that we saw last week, with truck posts on DAT load boards down 5% for reefers. Out of California , Fresno outbound pricing jumped 4.4% Dallas to Phoenix , up 22¢ to $2.28/mile. HOT MARKETS. Ontario prices climbed 2.3% NOT SO HOT.

The load-to-truck ratio is a sensitive, real-time indicator of the balance between demand and capacity. Los Angeles to Phoenix added 14¢ to $3.56/mile. Western produce picked up in nearly every market, led by gains in Twin Falls, ID and Fresno in Central California. Fresno to Denver added 20¢ to hit $3.18/mile.

Plus, when reefers are in high demand, van capacity tends to tighten up, too. Look for a load from Twin Falls to Phoenix , which paid $2.24 From Phoenix, head back to L.A. with a third leg that originates in Reno, Fresno, or a handful of other hot markets, as well. Reefer load availability increased 7.1% and Canada.

Winter weather in the Upper Midwest and Northeast is also leading to tighter capacity and higher prices in those regions. Prices were also up on the lane from Denver to Phoenix. Out of California, reefer loads paid less in Ontario and Fresno. Van rates on the lane from Columbus to Allentown have averaged $2.96

That may have caused reefer trucks to spill over into van capacity out in Charlotte , with the extra competition driving down outbound van rates. Shipments out of the Santa Maria District also pushed rates up out of the Fresno market. Chicago remains soft, and the lane to Buffalo fell 23¢ to $2.09.
