Halloween Candy – A Scary Supply Chain Planning Problem

Logility

In the interactive “ Top Halloween Candy by State ” map, CandyStore.com shows my beloved candy corn is the favorite candy for trick-or-treaters in Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Iowa, Michigan and Alabama. I admit, I love to eat Halloween candy as much as most grade school children (maybe more). My favorite: candy corn of course! What’s not to like about candy that is sugar mixed with more sugar!

Hanjin, Hurricanes, Harvests May Boost Truckload Rates

DAT Solutions

Further West, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho all appear to be on track for onions and potatoes. The spot marketplace remains tame despite occasional surges that cause scattered rate hikes. Capacity finds those opportunities, and throughout 2016, spot markets have restored 'normalcy' without generating the ripple effects that typically drive contract rates higher. I’d advise shippers to not get complacent about transportation costs for the longer term, however.

Rates and Demand Are Still High for Refrigerated Freight

DAT Solutions

Those, combined with the supply chain disruptions caused by the hurricanes, have led to tight capacity in southern Idaho, and outbound rates continue to climb out of Twin Falls. Seasonal harvests are winding down, but capacity is still tight for reefer freight. That’s led to higher reefer rates on the West Coast and in the Midwest. Potato shippers seem to be feeling the effects of the ELD protests that have been scattered across the country.

OnTrac , previously known as California Overnight, is headquartered in Chandler, AZ and serves California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Colorado, and Idaho. Introduction. Although UPS and Fedex may seem like the best options due to their prevalence, it’s important to look into alternative small parcel carriers. These carriers may be able to provide greater flexibility at a similar or lower price.

Freight Gathers Strength in Early November, Led by Western Region

DAT Solutions

Strong potato harvests in southern Idaho, as well as apples from Washington and Michigan, add to a respectable volume of iceberg lettuce from the San Joaquin Valley and the Imperial Valley near Yuma, AZ. We look at national trends every week, but sometimes the detail can get lost. Then we look at lane-by-lane reports, and we might miss a broader trend. I decided to look at last week's rate trends by region.

How Locally Grown Products are Disrupting F&B Manufacturing

Some examples include sugar from Michigan grown sugar beets, cereals from midwest grain producing states, and potato products from Idaho grown potatoes.

The Strength of the Pack is the Wolf… The Strength of the Wolf is the Pack!

NC State SCRC

Wolves now number about 1,700 in the Western states of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon and Washington. In a recent article in Supply Chain Navigator , I spend some time discussing the interesting relationship between the introduction of wolves in Yellowstone Park, and the evolution of digital supply chains. When the wolves were all killed off in 1926 due to over-hunting, the elk population erupted, and the larger herds took a heavy toll on the systems’ trees and plants.

Imported Produce Volume Outpaces Home-Grown

still grows plenty of apples, onions, and potatoes, in Washington, Colorado and Idaho, respectively. There is a shift underway right now in the refrigerated freight segment. Two main factors are involved. More restaurant spending, more contract freight. The first, and perhaps the most important influence, is on the consumer side. As a nation, we are spending more money in restaurants and proportionally less in grocery stores. That has a big impact on the supply chain.

Another notable city is Boise, Idaho. Given the less expensive cost of living in Boise as compared to those cities, it makes sense that tech talent is tempted to live and work primarily from Idaho’s largest city and travel to those larger tech hubs when necessary.

Van and Reefer Operators Give Thanks for Rate Increases

DAT Solutions

Look for loads of trees leaving Oregon, and potatoes out of Idaho or North Dakota. Twin Falls, Idaho is a great source for outbound reefer loads, prior to Thanksgiving. Thanks in part to seasonal food items, rates are finally trending back up for vans and reefers. Late harvests are beginning the journey to your Thanksgiving table, via food processing plants and distribution centers.

Pre-Christmas Demand Could Keep Reefer Rates High

DAT Solutions

Potato shippers have continued to be busy, and there were big increases on a couple of lanes out of Southern Idaho. Reefer rates skyrocketed in November, with the national average hitting its highest mark in more than 3 years at $2.43/mile. Things have calmed down a bit so far in December, with many of those crazy-high prices coming back down to earth.

Reefer Capacity Gets Tighter Ahead of Thanksgiving

DAT Solutions

In general, eastbound lanes out of Southern Idaho paid better last week than they did the week before. Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so trucks are still in high demand to move refrigerated freight. Just like with dry van freight , reefer capacity tightened in the first week of November, meaning that shippers and brokers had a harder time finding trucks to move those reefer loads. That pushed rates higher in many areas, especially out of Chicago and California.

Where Did Reefer Rates Rise the Most Last Week?

DAT Solutions

Load counts are still high in Southern Idaho , and in general, westbound and southbound lanes were up, while eastbound lanes tended to have lower rates. Reefer load counts on the top lanes kept climbing last week, while rates continued to readjust seasonally. Prices continued to slide in the Southeast, coming down from the previous peaks caused by Hurricane Irma. Reefer volumes were up near the Mexican border, especially in McAllen, TX , where rates have climbed 12% in the past month.

California Reefer Freight Starts to Heat Up

DAT Solutions

Other markets to hit a lull last week included Miami, Southern Idaho, and Grand Rapids. Reefer rates rose 10¢ per mile in June, compared to May, landing at $2.12, the highest monthly average in almost two years. Load availability was up 30% compared to May, and 84% compared to June 2015. HOT MARKETS: The biggest changes last week were in California, where reefer freight finally started to move out of Fresno and Sacramento in serious quantities, but load counts fell sharply in L.A.

Few hot spots remain for reefers

DAT Solutions

Apart from Idaho, most of the seasonal action is in imports. Expect a rush of reefer demand this week in areas hit by sub-zero temperatures, as shippers attempt to prevent sensitive cargo from freezing. If you don't want to drive into that slippery mess, head for someplace warm and load up on fresh produce until the storm passes. Rates are cooling off for refrigerated freight across most of the country, but a few hot spots still remain.

Van Volume Grows in Midwest, but Rates Slip

DAT Solutions

Harvests in Idaho are down from their fall peak , but demand in the southern part of the state remains high. Van load availability dropped another 9% on the spot market last week, while truck posts on DAT Load Boards held steady (up 0.6%). As a result, the national load-to-truck ratio fell from 1.6 loads per truck. Expect volume to ramp up again as Thanksgiving approaches. The Hot State Map for the week of Oct. 11-17 also shows favorable load-to-truck ratios in Oregon.

Hurricane Matthew Affects Spot Rates and Freight Volumes

DAT Solutions

Potatoes are still rolling out of Idaho , and we could see renewed pressure on rates. Spot market rates were up last week, but volumes fell. Hurricane Matthew likely played a role in both of those factors. Shippers paid more to move freight ahead of the storm, and then load posts dropped when the affected markets locked down at the end of the week. Inbound rates could rise in hard-hit areas like North Carolina this week.

Looking for a Reefer Load? Try These 5 Markets

DAT Solutions

Southern Idaho is coming down from its fall harvest peak, but there's still a high number of loads to be found in the Twin Falls, ID, area. The national reefer rate average lost 5¢ last week, but there are still pockets in the country where reefer demand remains high. Below are five markets where you can find a reefer load fast and make a nice profit. Each is in the top 20 for load posts and has load-to-truck ratios well above the national average of 3.9 loads available per truck.
