A global chemical manufacturer recently had to replace ships that transported bulk materials to ports. These materials were then transferred to barges and rail cars for delivery, and finally to terminals where they were packaged into shipping containers for final delivery by rail.

As shown in the map, the company has 4 distribution centers wherein each location is shipping to several places across the US (for the sake of simplicity we are not showing the manufacturing and sourcing locations here). CSCO and CPO, both can benefit from a closer collaboration. S&OP can serve as a vehicle towards that.

Hurricane Harvey has struck a significant blow to the Houston, Texas metro area, home to the sixth largest import terminal in the world, as well as all of the shipping lanes in the Gulf Coast area. For manufacturing, those metrics are new orders, production, employment, supplier deliveries, and inventories of input materials.

I was at a customer last week that shipped to distributors and did not know the site of customer facilities. The focus is on functional metrics, but are unable to get to overall supply chain metrics.
