We got a welcomed surge of spot market freight to close out July. That would’ve led to more reefer trucks competing for van freight, and the extra capacity kept rates down. That's normal, since it comes right after the end of Q1, when shippers are rushing to move freight before closing their books. Reefer freight has been gaining momentum. Out West, Sacramento to Portland gained 22¢ to $2.44/mile. Outbound lanes there dipped slightly despite fairly strong demand ahead of Easter.

Demand for flatbed transportation has been off the charts for much of 2018. The ratio has fallen back below 100, but demand is still high across the country. Last week’s key markets were outside of Texas , which shows the diversification in the flatbed segment – it’s not just the energy sector.

Reefer markets continued to sizzle during the last week of June, as the end of Q2 and the upcoming 4th of July holiday added to pressure on freight rates. Truck load demand continued to outpace capacity in the Southeast, leading to higher prices out of Atlanta. Changes in the ratio typically signal impending changes in freight rates.
